Case Study
~3,000 Miles of Pipeline in Under a Week: How Hope Gas Decides Where to Invest First
About the Case Study
Hope Gas uses Bridger’s methane data to prioritize pipeline replacement, target capital investment, and streamline project planning with actionable insight on nearly 3,000 miles of pipeline delivered in less than one week.
Challenge:
Some of Hope Gas’s pipes have been in the ground since World War II. The utility has operated in West Virginia for 128 years and manages roughly 3,000 miles of gathering pipeline across 39 counties. Detecting emissions by walking it all would take years. Hope Gas needed a faster way to decde where replacement dollars should go.
Approach:
Hope Gas partnered with Bridger to scan its entire gathering pipeline system. Bridger delivered actionable information for all of Hope’s assets in less than one week, identifying where methane emissions occurred and quantifying their release rates.
The Hope Gas team then loaded the emission measurements into its GIS and ranked every finding by emission rate, pipe size, proximity to high consequence areas, and other factors. That ranking now drives its capital expenditure plan.
By prioritizing replacement work, Hope Gas could keep crews productive and allocate capital to the lines that matter most.
Key Takeaway
Hope Gas turned methane data into a capital plan. By pairing measured emission rates with pipe and community risk, the utility knows which lines to replace first, keeps crews productive, and has a clear path to reduce emissions year over year.
Results reflect one customer's specific program and aren't a performance guarantee for other engagements. Individual results may vary based on site conditions, operating practices, and other factors, and past performance does not guarantee future results.
Business Impact
Rapid, Large-Scale Coverage
Actionable emissions information on thousands of miles of gathering pipeline in less than one week
Data-Driven Pipeline Replacement
Guide pipeline replacement with quantified emissions data
Confident Capital Allocation
More efficient pipe replacement sequencing, with less time spent mobilizing and demobilizing crews
Focused Field Repairs
Field teams focus on fixing emissions instead of finding them
Trailblazer's Award 2026
Hope Gas expects emissions rates to decline year over year as pipeline segments are replaced, supporting confidence among regulators, customers, and communities in how capital is allocated. Bridger recognized the utility’s leadership with its inaugural Trailblazer Award at the 2026 Trailblazers Summit.
